Best Sunrise Spot In Thailand

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint in Thailand is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen in my travels. It’s also pretty easy to get there by driving from the resort island of Phuket.

This scenic spot overlooks spectacular Phang Nga Bay, a Thai national park with dozens of small islands. The sunrise in Samet Nangshe is especially beautiful because the sun rises directly over the bay!

You can visit Samet Nangshe Viewpoint on a day trip from Phuket and return on the same day, or you can stay a night or two at the Samet Nangshe Boutique hotel, which has a pool and rooms overlooking the same stunning scenario.

This travel guide will tell you how to get to Samet Nangshe Scenic Spot with or without a tour, where to stay, and everything you need to know before you go!

Samet Nangshe’s View: What to Expect

There are two different places in Phang Nga province from which you can enjoy the beautiful view of the bay: you can go to the Samet Nangshe scenic spot, or you can see an almost identical view from the Samet Nangshe Boutique hotel, which has multiple scenic spots in different places. levels on the hill.

Most of the photos in this blog post were taken at the boutique hotel, but the view is essentially the same in both places. It’s a wonderful view, with lots of small islands in the bay and one large karst island towering above the others. It looks like a fairytale landscape.

Drones are allowed at the viewpoint and you can take some truly amazing photos of the bay from above. Drones are also allowed in the hotel, but they asked us to do it in the parking lot so as not to disturb anyone in the hotel, which is fair and expected.

Samet Nangshe’s point of view

When you first arrive at Samet Nangshe and park your vehicle, there is a bit of a climb to climb.

The view point is at the top of a steep 800 meter hill and they have a 4×4 shuttle to take you up there, or you can hike on your own in about 15-20 minutes if you are fit and want to save some money .

You can’t take your vehicle to the top, so those are your two choices. Personally I would recommend the shuttle, especially if you arrive in the dark for the dawn.

The hill has a cafe and some tourist swings and birds nests for taking Instagram photos, which will be fun for children and families.

There are small primitive bungalows that you can rent for 700 Baht (~$20 USD) per night, or you can also camp up there in a tent for 200 Baht. I’m sure the prices will increase as this place becomes more and more popular!

Jurassic Park vibes

If you go to Samet Nangshe Boutique hotel, there is a similar facility to reach the scenic spot: a shuttle can take you up there, or you can hike on your own.

There are several viewing points in the hotel, but the best in our experience was the Bay View Cafe, which is the highest point in the hotel.

After sunrise, you can purchase food or drinks at the bar while enjoying the view. It’s an amazing view and we felt like we could stay there a week just relaxing and taking photos.

Somewhere out there in the bay is the famous James Bond Island of Thailand, although you can’t see it from the viewpoint. It’s easy to go there on a day trip from Samet Nangshe, and if you stay at the boutique hotel they can organize it for you.

Entrance ticket

Samet Nangshe Scenic Spot has an entrance fee of 30 Baht (~$1 USD) per person, plus a shuttle fee of 90 Baht return.

There is no entrance fee to the hotel. The shuttle costs 50 Baht and you can visit and eat at the restaurant and bar even if you are not staying in one of the hotel rooms.

Best time to visit Samet Nangshe Scenic Spot: Sunrise!

The best time to visit Samet Nangshe scenic spot and take photos is at sunrise. Is fantastic!

Depending on the day and month, the sunrise time in Phang Nga Province can be between 6:00 and 6:45. You can check it on your weather app. Remember to arrive at least 30-45 minutes before sunrise so you can see the first show of colours.

The sun actually rises directly over the islands of Phang Nga Bay, creating a simply stunning scene. It’s probably the best sunrise spot I’ve ever seen anywhere in the world.

The colors of dawn: waking up to this view is truly special

Aside from sunrise, another great time to take photos from the vantage point is late afternoon or evening, when the rocks are well lit and the sun is behind you.

The worst time for photos is late morning or around midday, when the bay is backlit and the sun is usually too strong behind the islands.

Surprisingly, the viewpoint was never very crowded with tourists any time we were there, and most people left just after sunrise.

I’m sure the popularity will change over time as it is a beautiful place, but luckily the top of the hill is quite large, so it should be able to accommodate many visitors without being too crowded.

How to get to Samet Nangshe from Phuket

Samet Nangshe scenic spot is located in Thailand’s Phang Nga province, about 45 kilometers northeast of Phuket International Airport (HKT).

You can get there from Phuket by driving a car or motorbike, hiring a taxi or taking a tour. Unfortunately there is no bus option yet.

• By Car/Motorbike

If you’re driving from Phuket, you can get to Samet Nangshe by following Route 4031, crossing the Sarasin Bridge, turning onto Highway 1004, and continuing until you see a clear road sign for Samet Nangshe Viewpoint.

You can use this Google Maps location to directly reach the scenic spot, which has plenty of parking, or this location on the map to reach the Samet Nangshe Boutique hotel.

The journey takes approximately 1 hour from Phuket Airport, 1.5 hours from Patong Beach or Old Town Phuket, or a full 2 hours from Karon or Kata Beach in southern Phuket.

• By Taxi/Private Driver

If you don’t have much driving experience in Thailand, it is safer and easier to hire a taxi or private driver to take you to the scenic spot. You can ask your hotel in Phuket to arrange a driver for you.

We stayed at Samet Nangshe Boutique, so we booked a driver with them. He picked us up in a large, comfortable air-conditioned van and when we left the hotel after our stay, they also helped us organize another driver to take us back to Phuket. In both cases we paid by credit card, which was very convenient!

The price of transportation was 1,800 baht ($50) from Phuket Old Town, a reasonable price for two people going outside Phuket Island. From the airport it costs 1,200 baht ($33).

If you won’t be staying overnight in Samet Nangshe, you can negotiate with your driver to wait for you while you take photos and then drive you back to Phuket.

• For Tours

Another quick and easy way to get to Samet Nangshe is with a tour. Viator offers a Thai cooking class that goes to Samet Nangshe Viewpoint from Phuket and also includes the Benyaran Museum and Khok Kloi Fresh Market.

We have always had a good experience with this company, but in this case the tours are unusually expensive. Hopefully shared tours for the viewpoint will be offered soon, that way you can join a group and the prices will be lower per person.

Where to stay: Samet Nangshe Boutique Hotel

If you want to stay longer and get the best sunrise and sunset views and photos, you should stay at Samet Nangshe Boutique hotel. We stayed there 2 nights during the rainy season and absolutely loved it.

It’s definitely pricey, but the entire hotel offers views of Phang Nga Bay and the sunrise right outside your door. There is a public infinity pool and some of the luxury rooms also have a private pool or tub overlooking Phang Nga Bay.

We stayed in one of the basic rooms (the Deluxe King room), which didn’t have a direct view of the bay and the sunrise, but you could walk right out the door and see it in the morning. We also took a short walk up to the Bay View Cafe to climb even higher, and that’s where most of the photos in this blog post were taken.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and the WiFi is decent. But the main reason to come here is to enjoy the view for as long as possible. It’s truly exceptional.

What to bring

  • Sun protection. During the day you’ll probably need a hat or sunscreen, as the sun can be scorching at this scenic spot.
  • Spray. This is a good idea in case you encounter mosquitoes on your way up to the viewpoint, although we didn’t see many ourselves.
  • Electric torch. A small light or headlamp can be useful for reaching the viewpoint in the dark.
  • Waterproof bag. If you plan to stay longer and visit James Bond Island, then a waterproof bag or phone case to protect your electronic devices on the boat is also a good idea.
  • Energy accumulator. If you plan to tent camp at the viewpoint, a power bank is a good idea because there is no other way to charge your phones up there.

Frequently Asked Questions (Samet Nangshe)

  • How can you get to Samet Nangshe?
You can get to Samet Nangshe by driving a car or motorbike, taking a taxi or taking a tour. It’s relatively easy to get there from Phuket or Krabi.
  • Is there a bus to Samet Nangshe?
Unfortunately it is currently not possible to reach Samet Nangshe by bus or public transport. There are buses from Phuket to Phang Nga, but it is a very large area. They will drop you off far from the view point, so you will still have to hire a taxi. Logistically it wouldn’t be a great idea.
  • Can you get there with the Grab app?
Yes, you can reach Samet Nangshe Scenic Spot with the ride-hailing app Grab, which is like Southeast Asia’s version of Uber. However, some drivers may cancel the ride as it is a long distance from Phuket and it may not be economical for them to return without a passenger. Also, even if you get there, you will probably have to find an alternative way to get back to the city as you will not be able to find a new Grab driver near the scenic spot area.
  • Is it worth it from Samet Nangshe’s point of view?
Yes, it’s totally worth it. This is one of the most beautiful places in Thailand, especially if you go there at sunrise. It’s my favorite place for sunrise anywhere in the world.
